They're not. The Google algorithm easily detects fake and/or brigaded reviews. Not only does the algorithm detect IP's that haven't been tracked for a significant period of time at the location, it also detects trends related to an establishment's appearance in the media. The review section isn't meant to be a sounding board for the public's reaction to a news story, it's meant to be a place for honest customer experiences who have actually patronized an establishment relative to when the review was written. The algorithm is updated daily to get better at filtering out dishonesty, brigading and point farming. I'm sorry if that's not what you want to here, but it is what it is.
